HAYHURST - When MeiLan Wechsler, a Hayhurst Elementary second-grader, saw televised coverage of the famine in Somalia, she immediately turned to her mother, Theresa Wechsler, and asked what she could do to help.

Together, the two brainstormed ways that she could raise money. In the days that followed, Wechsler made dozens of bookmarks, each one uniquely decorated and carefully laminated. She sold the bookmarks that Sunday at her church, Hillsdale Community Church - United Church of Christ, raising $100 in total. Members of the church were so moved by her commitment that they matched the funds, sending $200 in all to The United Nations World Food Program. The money raised by Wechsler and her church will provide 400 meals to hungry Somalis.
