Medicine Hat gets closing goals to down Hawks 4-2
MEDICINE HAT, Alberta - The Portland Winterhawks led twice, both times early in the game, but wound up dropping a 4-2 road decision to the Medicine Hat Tigers in Western Hockey League play Wednesday night.
The Hawks fell to one win and three losses on their nine-game trip, and they slipped to 7-6-1-1 for the season.
Medicine Hat raised its record to 10-4-0-0.
Portland led 1-0 when defenseman Joe Morrow got his third goal of the season at 9:55 of the first period.
Medicine Hat tied the score 1:02 later.
The Winterhawks went ahead 50 seconds later, as Chase De Leo scored for the second time this season.
The Tigers evened the score with less than a minute to go in the second period, and the teams were square until the 17:17 mark of the final period.
Medicine Hat made the final margin two goals with an empty-net tally with 29 seconds left in the game.
Mac Carruth made 21 saves for the Hawks, and the Tigers' Tyler Bunz stopped 27 shots.
Portland returns to action Friday at 6 p.m. PT at Lethbridge.
