Quick start lands the Gophers a trip to Eugene

by: David Ball Gresham’s Kennedy Martin finished second at Wednesday district meet, as the Gophers punched their ticket to state next weekend.

Last season, the Gresham girls missed a berth to state by a single point. On Wednesday, the Gophers made sure the race wasn't even close.

Heavy favorite St. Mary's showed why it will be in the mix for the 6A title next weekend in Eugene, flooding the lead group with its five counting runners placing in the top 15 overall. Sophomore Paige Rice led from start to finish, covering the 5K course in 17:54. The Blues finished with 33 points, half the total of its closest challenger.

That left Gresham and Barlow locked in a rematch of the 2010 season, each fighting for second place and the league's last spot to state.

The Gophers charged to the front early and packed six runners ahead of Barlow #2 racer after the first small loop on the course....
