Kootenay cools off Hawks 4-1


CRANBROOK, British Columbia - The Kootenay Ice took the lead for good late in the second period with a short-handed goal late in the second period on Saturday, and beat the Portland Winterhawks 4-1.

The teams were tied 1-1 after Tyler Wotherspoon scored for the Hawks on a power play at 8:28 of the second period.

Kootenay's go-ahead score came at 17:58 of the period in the rematch of last season's Western Hockey League finals.

The Ice made it 3-1 at 1:39 of the third period, and found an empty net with 40 seconds remaining.

Mac Carruth made 25 saves for Portland, as each team took 29 shots.

Nic Petan and Taylor Peters assisted on the Winterhawks' score.

Portland was 6 of 6 on the penalty kill and 1 of 6 on power plays.

The Winterhawks slipped to 8-7-1-1, with a game Wednesday at Kamloops.
