A new 'green boutique' has opened at 8235 S.E. 13th Avenue, location of the former Crystal Quest jewelry store.
'Camp Hollyhock' is a feminine clothing outlet owned by Marcee Whaley-Melton, who hand-sews all her creations from recycled fabrics and trims. Her products blend vintage lace and fabrics with modern fashion trends, using her own patterns. Her business card asserts breezily, 'Saving your closet from mass production, one dress at a time!'
While Marcee has made and sold her unique creations locally for nearly ten years, this is her first storefront boutique. Daughter Katie Melton, who studied visual merchandising at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, manages the shop. Several local consigners also contribute accessories - such as jewelry, children's clothing, aprons, pillows, and felted bird decorations.
'People are really excited about our one-of-a-kind market bags, free with purchase,' smiles Katie. 'Everything here is made from recycled materials. We find vintage fabrics, lace tablecloths, and other trims at estate sales. Friends also bring us donations of materials they know we can use.
'My mom sells her creations through outlets in Washington, Texas, New York, and other locations, but we have a better price range here. We want our clothing to be affordable for the woman who wants to look and live fabulously, but in a thoughtful way.'
Camp Hollyhock's spring and summer fashions have been featuring pastel and lacy styling reminiscent of Flower Fairy clothing. 'Our fall and winter focus will blend seasonally darker fabric patterns and layering,' says Marcee.
'We have embellished sweaters, hats, jackets, scarves, underwear, and socks; everything that girls and women might wear. I like to individualize them with special vintage touches - sashes, hems, edging, and patches - that present a unique look to fashion-conscious shoppers."
Camp Hollyhock is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 am until 5 pm. Call 503/914-7636 for more information.
