Freshman Shelby Mauritson had a big first varsity match Sept. 8 in leading Madras High School to a 20-25, 26-24, 25-17, 27-25 victory at Scappoose in nonconference volleyball play.
   Mauritson had 11 kills, 12 assists and served 22 for 24 with three aces.
   Shani Rehwinkel had a hand in the victory for the White Buffalos. The senior posted 10 kills, 15 assists and 16 digs, while junior Sarah Brown added eight kills and seven digs.
   On Sept. 10, the White Buffalos were tripped up in the semifinals of the Cascade tournament.
   Madras defeated Taft 25-14, 25-15, split with Scappoose 25-23, 18-25 and lost to Sisters 11-25, 18-25 in pool play,
   Madras advanced to the silver bracket and defeated Salem Academy 25-16, 22-25, 15-12, but were eliminated by Stayton 22-25, 13-25.
   Sisters won the tournament.
   In the tournament, Lauren Simmons had 55 digs and served 24 of 25. Laura Sullivan booked 25 kills and 17 digs. Brown finished with 24 kills and 18 digs and Elle Renault had 19 digs and four aces.
