Lady Lions split VB matches, finish 5th

St. Helens falls to Liberty, tops Sandy in NWOC action
by: John Brewington UP HIGH—St. Helens’ Brooke Cathers goes high on the attack during last week’s match with Liberty.

The St. Helens Lady Lions wrapped up their regular season in the Northwest Oregon Conference with a loss to league champion Liberty, but a four-game win at Sandy.

Liberty, runner-up in state to Sherwood last season, breezed past the Lady Lions with wins in three straight games, 25-13, 25-18, and 25-15. They are currently ranked fifth in the OSAA rankings and were to host Franklin (ranked 35th) on Tuesday.

St. Helens managed to split the week, much as they have done throughout the season, with a 25-7, 25-23, 21-25, and 25-20 win over Sandy on Thursday night.

That victory gave St. Helens fourth overall in the conference. The Lady Lions are currently ranked 16th in the state, right behind Parkrose.

St. Helens was to host The Dalles-Wahtonka on Tuesday night in a Northern Division play-in match up. TDW is ranked 27th overall. They finished league with a 2-10 record and were 4-12 overall on the season.

The winner of Tuesday's match-up will be seeded into the 5A state playoff bracket, based on their overall OSAA ranking. The 16 winners from Tuesday advance to a special round of eight on Friday, Nov. 5, and the winners from that go to the final eight at Liberty High School Nov. 11-12.
