Sen. Merkley report says needed bridge work could bring back jobs
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley released a report Tuesday showing that 456 bridges in Oregon - including eight in Columbia County - are structurally deficient.
Rebuilding those bridges, the report concludes, would bring thousands of jobs back to the state. Oregon has lost over 40,000 construction jobs since 2007, according to a press release from Merkley's office. The report states that Columbia County has lost 140 construction jobs.
'These investments are essential, and we can either do them now, when so many construction workers are unemployed, or later at a much higher cost,' Merkley said in the release.
