Host MST places second to Cascade

>Goodwin earns first eight times for local squadMadras Swim Team's best swimmer Ian Goodwin was just that last weekend at the annual Summer Kickoff meet held at the Madras Aquatic Center.
Swimming in the boys' 13-and-over division, Goodwin earned eight first-place finishes in leading the boys team to first place with 315 points, ahead of the Cascade Aquatic Club (307). His efforts also helped the Madras Swim Team place second overall in the combined team standings with 464 points. Cascade won the overall team title with 516 points.
Goodwin led MST to the top three spots in the 500-yard freestyle and the 200 individual medley with Bryce Williams and Brady Tucker, respectively. He also won the 100 freestyle, 200 butterfly, 400 individual medley, 200 breaststroke, 100 butterfly and the 200 freestyle.
Jordan Gemelas took top billing in the 100 breaststroke by seven seconds for MST, and teammate Cade Boston was first in the 13-and-over boys 200 backstroke, ahead of Williams and Tucker.
Boston, Gemelas, Williams and Ryan Goss teamed to win first place in the 200 medley relay for the MST boys.
Teague Schierling had a productive meet for MST in the boys 10-and-under division, placing third in the 100 individual medley and 100 butterfly, and second in the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly.
On the girls' side, Sophie Gemelas fared well in the 13-and-over field as well for MST. The MHS freshman won the 100 breaststroke, 200 breaststroke and the 100 butterfly in helping MST finish third in the girls' team standings, behind Cascade and Bend.
Aurora Gerhardt was first in the girls' 13-and-over 200 backstroke, and teammate Elizabeth Armitage was the top swimmer in the 50 freestyle in the same age division for MST. Allison Gregory, Ashtin Boston, Taylor Friederichs and Grace Friederichs earned Madras 14 points in the girls 12-and-under medley relay with a first-place finish.
On June 15, the team will host an intersquad meet, and will compete in the Bend Senior Meet and at the Prineville Meet June 29-July 1.
