How I See It, By Joe McHaney
Souers’ impact will be felt for yearsThe Todd Beamer Memorial Run, held annually July 4 is getting bigger and bigger.
The 14th annual event last year drew just over 200 participants, the most ever, and the 15th annual could top that with a larger than normal crowd expected for the July 4 celebration due to the District 5 Little League all-star tournaments, also held in Madras.
The Todd Beamer Memorial Run is an event to help raise funds for a Todd Beamer Memorial scholarship. Beamer, a Madras High School graduate, drowned on a Hood to Coast training run near Madras June 7, 1997, while attempting to rescue his dogs in the Willow Creek siphon. He was 28 at the time of his death.
After leading Madras to a 7-4 overall record and Greater Oregon League football title in 1986, Todd Beamer played football at Eastern Oregon University before he taught at Neah-Kah-Nie.
The event features a 10K race that begins east on Grizzly Road, a 6-mile walk that takes walkers through Madras Ranchos, and a 2-mile fun run/walk that begins and ends at Sahalee Park, which also serves as the finish line for the event.
Last year, Sara Hertel of Madras was the top 10K female runner for the second consecutive year. Hertel crossed in 45 minutes, 15 seconds. Josh Davis of Bend was the overall 10K winner and first male to cross the finish line in 39.49.
Glenda Cloud and Mary Carlson of Culver took top billing in the 6-mile walk for the third consecutive year. The dynamic duo crossed in 1:16.00.
In the 2-mile fun run/walk, Trevor Schongalla was the overall winner and top male finisher, crossing in 12.42. Abigail Affeldt was the top female finisher in 13.29.
Registration begins at 6:30 a.m. July 4, or participants can preregister at www.macaquatic.com.
Cost is $5 for Madras Aquatic Center members, $10 for in-district residents and $15 for out-of-district residents. A T-shirt is $10 extra.
