First State Champs

Majors team from 1964 recalled

   In 1964, Jefferson County Little League All-Stars made history. They were the first of several outstanding teams of coach and local Little League legend Dick Souers.
   They were the first -- and still the only -- Jefferson County team to win a state title in the most prestigious and iconic Little League division, the 11-12-year-old Majors.
   As the district tournament comes to Madras this week, we reflect back on the 1964 squad. The team lost but once, in the championship of the regional tournament. Their story entails thrilling comeback wins, stud pitching performances, racism endured, and a legacy as the cornerstone of Jefferson County Little League. See story in Sports.
