Goodwin becomes first MST state swim champion

Williams, Gemelas, Hocker also compete
Ian Goodwin is the best youth swimmer in Jefferson County.
The Madras Swim Team swimmer proved it again this past weekend at the Oregon 11-and-over state swimming championships held at Mount Hood Community College in Gresham. Goodwin took top billing in the 1,500-meter, placed third in the 400 individual medley and was seventh in the 200 butterfly.
"I was impressed with the way Ian swam," said MST head coach Bobby DeRoest. "He is our first lone state champion, and I think he was pretty excited about that."
Goodwin, along with teammates Sophie Gemelas, Josh Hocker and Bryce Williams all competed for the Madras Swim Team.
"We had quite a few more qualified, but only four attended the meet," DeRoest said. "We swam OK."
The MST will compete at the Bend Meet Aug. 10-12, before hosting an intersquad meet Aug. 17 at the Madras Aquatic Center to finish the seaons.
