Waterfall Fire near Shitike Creek
The Waterfall Fire on the Warm Springs Reservation, near Mount Jefferson, had grown to 2,700 acres by Aug. 15.
Ignited by a lightning strike on Aug. 5, the fire was fanned by hot, dry winds and is now burning valuable timberland on the reservation, near the headwaters of Shitike Creek, about 20 miles west of Warm Springs, according to Clay Penhollow, fire information officer.
A helicopter and about 350 people were fighting the fire on Wednesday, and the fire command had been turned over to Oregon Incident Management Team.
