iPhones to Spanish, Madras COCC offers fall term community learning classes

Would you like to utilize your iPhone more, or promote your business with a Facebook page?
   Maybe you're interested in learning to draw, speaking Spanish or knowing how to survive in the wilderness.
   Central Oregon Community Learning classes are being offered on those topics and more at the Madras campus fall term.

   In addition, the Oregon State University Open Campus is offering cooking classes and a pesticide training course.

   Windows 7 Essentials: Get comfortable with the basic elements of Windows 7, such as file management and system maintenance. The class meets from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sept. 22, with instructor Davis Barringer, and costs $59.
   Conversational Spanish I: Have fun while learning basic Spanish vocabulary, grammar and phrases for use while traveling or in the workplace. The class meets with instructor Christine Brown from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Mondays, Sept. 24 to Nov. 19, and costs $79.
   Launch Your Business: Have you recently opened your own company? Avoid costly mistakes and position yourself for success in this class, which has one-on-one business advising sessions.
   The class meets from 6-9 p.m., Oct. 3, through Nov. 7, with instructor Patti Norris, and costs $79.
   QuickBooks Pro, Beginning: Do your own bookkeeping and make it manageable and efficient using Quickbooks. Students need basic Windows experience and to bring a flash drive to save their work.
   The class meets from 1-4 p.m. Wednesdays, Oct. 3 and 10, with Patti Norris, and costs $65.
   You Can Draw!: Anyone can learn to draw. Instructor Barbara Berry will help you learn skills including volume, perspective, gesture, contour, negative space, shading and line. Supplies are included, except paper.
   The class meets from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 6, and costs $49.
   Conversational Spanish II: Continue to improve your Spanish speaking and reading abilities as your learn new phrases and sentences with instructor David Engle. The class meets from 6-8 p.m., Tuesdays, Oct. 9-Nov. 13, and costs $79.
   Spanish for Health Care Workers: Learn to quickly and effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking patients and their families in this six-week class. No previous Spanish required.
   David Engle teaches the class, which meets from 4-6 p.m., Tuesdays, Oct. 9-Nov. 13, and costs $95.
   Expressing Yourself with Your Camera: Local photographer Robin Gerke instructs this class which teaches the basic parts of the camera and how to apply them in different situations. Students will work in the computer lab on images using Photoshop.
   The class meets Wednesdays, from 6:30-8 p.m., Oct. 10-Nov. 14, and there will be a field trip from 9 a.m. to noon on one Saturday.
   Habits of Effectiveness: The class covers concepts in Stephen Covey's book "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People." Instructor Linda Nolte will offer the class from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Oct. 12, and the cost is $85.
   PowerPoint 2010: Construct professional presentations from scratch, and learn to manipulate graphics, along with audio and video clips. Bring a flash drive to save your work.
   Patty Norris teaches the one-day class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Oct. 12, at a cost of $65.
   Leveraging Facebook for Business: Students will gain an understanding of the strategy behind publishing, owning and leveraging a Facebook business page to engage customers.
   John Dempsey will teach the class from 6-9 p.m., Mondays, Oct. 15 and 22, and the cost is $89.
   Meditation Introduction: Experience a meditation medley with Kim Schmith as you learn how to create an encouraging, safe space. Explore many forms of meditation and choose one that's best for you.
   The class meets from 6:30-8 p.m., Mondays, Oct. 15-Nov. 5, and costs $45.
   Get More from your iPhone: Have an iPhone? Get tips on how this smallest of computers runs and cam change your life. Instructor Andrew Gorman will offer a one-day class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at a cost of $69.
   Excel 2010 Level II: Take your Excel knowledge to the next level by managing multiple worksheets, applying advance functions and adding graphics and using templates.
   The class meets from 9 a.m. to noon, Mondays, Oct. 29-Nov. 5, with Patty Norris, and costs $69.
   Wilderness Survival: Back-country travelers will learn the necessary skills to better prepare for a wilderness emergency. Black Miller instructs the one-day class from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 17. The class costs $39.
   Dealing with Difficult People: This workshop covers different types of difficult people, how they are created, how to shape interaction by choosing words that are less inflammatory, and more. Marge Cieri will teach the one-day class from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Friday, Dec. 7, and the cost is $85.
   OSU Open Campus
   Eat Right for Life: This is a three-part series for people who love food and want to learn how to make it healthy, tasty and affordable. Each class costs $15, and is held at the kitchen at 281 S.W. Third St, Suite A, Madras.
   Healthy Food Portions, 6-8 p.m., Oct. 15; Healthy Food Choices, 6-8 p.m., Oct. 22; and Healthy Eating on a Budget, 6-8 p.m., Oct. 29.
   Cultural Cooking Series: Experience some of the tastes of the cultures of Jefferson County. Making Fry Bread, 6-8 p.m., Oct. 18; and Salsa and Tamales, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Nov. 10, at the kitchen at 281 S.W. Third St, Suite A, Madras.
   Core Credit Pesticide Exam Training: For those who need to get or renew a private applicator's license. The class provides four hours of continuing education credit. The training is from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Dec. 7, and costs $49. Take the exam after the class for another $25.
