Culver sweeps TVC matches
With wins, Bulldogs stay near top of Class 2A RPIThe Culver volleyball team posted a 3-0 record in Tri-Valley Conference play, capped by a pair of Monday wins against Waldport and East Linn Christian Academy in Lebanon.
They beat Regis in straight sets Thursday in Stayton to start the trio of victories.
Against East Linn Christian, the Bulldogs needed four wild sets to dispatch the Eagles.
Scores were 25-21, 28-26, 19-25 and 27-25, and head coach Randi Viggiano said she was extremely proud of her team's perseverance and grit to work through the craziness.
"We were down seven or eight points in two sets and came back to win both," she said. "We played with so much heart and tenacity; it was incredible."
Viggiano said a lot of the team is "under the weather" and dealing with illness, but she said she doesn't want to use that as an excuse to not perform.
She said East Linn is one of the better teams in the conference and playing there is always tough.
In the end, however, her team was able to keep its intensity at a level that allowed them to get back into the sets and, eventually, win.
"We were celebrating every point, no matter if we were up or down," she said.
Before the East Linn match, Culver handed the Irish a 25-22, 25-9, 25-15 whooping to kick off the three-way meet.
Culver is now 8-1 in TVC play and is on an eight-match winning streak.
The Bulldogs host Western Mennonite of Salem at 6 p.m. Thursday in a TVC match.
