Quick thinking saves horse

Driver unhooks trailer before checking engine
Quick thinking by a Fossil horsewoman saved the life of her horse during a vehicle fire Oct. 29.
According to an Oregon State Police report, Melissa Bowerman, 40, of Fossil, was pulling a horse trailer with one horse in it, on State Road 218 at milepost 14.8, when she noticed smoke coming from under the dashboard of her Ford F350 pickup.
Bowerman immediately stopped, unhooked the trailer and pulled the pickup forward before investigating.
Popping the hood, she discovered an engine fire caused by a pack rat nest. The fire ended up consuming the vehicle and also started a small brush fire. The fire was eventually contained by the Antelope and Shaniko fire departments.
