Soroptimists offer scholarships to women
The Violet Richardson Award is for a young woman between the ages of 14 and 17. It recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as fighting drugs, crime and violence, cleaning up the environment, and working to end discrimination and poverty.
Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest.
Do you see challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? Young women who believe in the power of volunteer action may be eligible to win a Violet Richardson Award.
The second award is the Soroptimist Women's Opportunity Award, which gives women the resources they need to improve their education, skills and employment prospects. The selected woman may use the award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as book purchases, childcare and transportation.
Applications may be downloaded from the Soroptimist website www.sijeffco.org, or candidates may pick up applications at Home Federal Bank, Madras High School counseling office, or the Culver High School office.
Applications may be sent to: Jefferson County Soroptimist, P.O. Box 1028, Madras, OR 97741, or returned to Bonnie Grote or Julie Johnson by Jan. 8, 2013. For more information, call Grote at 541-475-6901 or Johnson at 541-475-7827.
