East County rivals clash in playoffs

6A VOLLEYBALL - Gresham and Barlow have met in three big-school title games

A pair of powerhouse volleyball programs will meet at 5 p.m. Saturday at Barlow High, but only one will reach this year's 6A state tournament.

Barlow and Gresham have faced off in plenty of big matches over the years (see box), squaring off in the big-school championship match three times over the years. The biggest nailbiter out of that set came in the 1989 final when the teams went the distance in the old best-of-three format.

'I just remember it being a really close, long match - it was intense the whole way,' said Gresham coach Lori Anderson-Cook, who was a senior setter for the Gophers that year....
