Musical features 58 students
Gresham High School, 1200 N. Main Ave., is presenting 'The Sound of Music' Thursdays through Sundays, Nov. 10, 11, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19 and 20.
All shows begin at 7 p.m., except for Nov. 13 and 20, which are at 2 p.m.
Directed by Sara Dempsey, the musical features 58 students including 11 local elementary or middle school children.
Technical Director Richard Allen has worked with students on building sets, and costume designers Clarae Reynolds and Annette Durheim have spent several weeks designing and creating the many costumes needed for the elaborate musical.
'We are also featuring the 'Lonely Goatherd' puppet show with amazing marionettes generously donated by The Olde World Puppet Theatre,' Dempsey says.
Set in 1938 Austria, 'The Sound of Music' tells the story of Captain von Trapp and how his family's life is disrupted by Nazi Germany's annexation of Austria. The family has become well known as an amateur singing group, and after a final appearance at a local contest, they try to escape across the mountains on foot to Switzerland.
Musical Director Janine Kirstein, Orchestra Director Emily Blanshan and Choreographer Savanna Wagner-Zelinka are working with a stellar cast. Actors are in parenthesis: Maria Rainer (Taylor Johnson), Captain Georg von Trapp (Jon Kratz), Elsa Schraeder (Nicole Norton), Max Detweiler (Kevin Miller), Rolf Gruber (Ryan Leveque), Liesl von Trapp (Annie Nedelisky), Friedrich von Trapp (Alec Anderson), Louisa von Trapp (Arianne Melton), Kurt von Trapp (Christian Turner), Brigitta von Trapp (Charity Pickering), Marta von Trapp (Makayla Meeuws), Gretl von Trapp (Laurel Bice), Mother Abbess (Sarah Hull) and Sister Margaretta (Erin Chamberlain).
