Sunset pushes the Scots hard but finally falls 12-8 in the state playoffs
CORVALLIS - Say this at least about the Sunset girls water polo team - the Apollos went down swinging.
Sunset, the fourth-place team from the Metro League, saw its state playoff run last just one game - a 12-8 loss to Mt. Hood Conference champion David Douglas on Friday - but the Apollos definitely got their shots in along the way.
Sunset's loss to David Douglas - held Friday at Osborn Aquatic Center - ended the Apollos' season at 11-12.
In that game, the Scots edged ahead 4-2 in the first quarter, extended their edge to 8-4 at the half, then made it 11-5 at the end of the third period before the Apollos mounted a spirited rally in the final stanza.
Shelby Thomas scored twice in the first quarter for David Douglas and led her team with four goals, tied for game-high honors with teammate Emma Redwine-Hixson.
Sunset senior Juliana Collins did her part to keep the Apollos close with four goals in the first half and five for the game, but junior Cassandra Dieterich was next best in scoring with just two while Sydney Keller added one in the loss.
Despite the loss, goalie Abby Griffiths did herself proud, making 12 saves in the game, five of those coming in the third quarter alone.
David Douglas lost its quarterfinal match-up to Tigard 10-8 and advances to the fifth-place semifinal game against Westview at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Osborn Aquatic Center.
