Banks voters say yes to police levy

Vote is decisive in retaining levy used to pay for contract police services through Washington County Sheriff's office

Voters in Banks affirmed an operating levy to pay for police service Tuesday night.

In final unofficial numbers reported Wednesday morning, 166 voters approved the measure (about 54 percent) and 144 (or 46 percent) voted no.

The levy, which applies an additional $2.35 per $1,000 of assessed value on city property tax bills, pays for a contract with the Washington County Sheriff's Office to provide police service inside the city limits.

The city of Banks has no police department of its own.

The levy is estimated to raise about $226,531 each year.
