It's eighth-ranked Cal Lutheran (8-1) at No. 5 Linfield (9-0) at noon Saturday in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Linfield beat visiting Cal Lutheran 24-14 to open the season Sept. 10. The Wildcats clinched the postseason berth and outright Northwest Conference title with a 47-14 home win over Lewis and Clark last week. The Pioneers finished 7-2 (4-2 NWC). Pacific Lutheran (6-3) also went 4-2 in league, despite a loss to L and C. Whitworth and Willamette were 3-3 in league, followed by Pacific at 1-5 and Puget Sound at 0-6.
The Portland Pilots (9-9-2) will meet one of the four No. 1 seeds, Florida State (15-6-1), in the second round of the NCAA women's tournament at 3 p.m. PT Friday at Tallahassee, Fla. The Pilots advanced with an eight-round, 7-6 shootout win over Oregon State in a first-round match-up, after playing to a 1-1 draw through overtime. UP beat Florida State 2-1 at Merlo Field early in the season.
The UP men tied for third in the West Coast Conference, matching San Diego at 6-5-1 after losing the finale 1-0 at home to Santa Clara. Second place went to Santa Clara (7-4-1), but the only WCC team picked for the 48-team NCAA tourney was Saint Mary's (7-3-2).
Concordia University will host an NAIA first-round doubleheader on Saturday. The Cavaliers' seventh-ranked men (16-1-1) will take on Great Falls (Mont.) at 4 p.m., and the Cavs' No. 7 women (15-4-1) will play Westminster of Utah at 7 p.m., both at the new Tuominen Yard, which opened on campus last weekend. … The men won the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament Saturday 2-0 over Corban in the first game at the new facility, and the women followed a few hours later with a 1-0 victory there over Northwest for the CCC crown. The men dominated their match, with a 32-4 edge in shots, and sophomore defender Jordan Green from Grant High headed in the second goal in the 69th minute.
In men's action, NAIA Warner Pacific (3-1) knocked off NCAA Division II Central Washington, the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champion, 92-89. The Knights used an 18-5 run to erase a 10-point, second-half deficit at Ellensburg, Wash. …. The Portland men are 2-1 after Monday's loss to Washington; they will play host to Washington State at 7 p.m. Sunday. … PSU's men are 1-1 after beating Seattle on Tuesday.
The PSU women will take a 2-0 record into Sunday's 7 p.m. game at Oregon. … UP is 1-1, with three games in Hawaii this weekend. … The Vikings will meet the Pilots at Chiles Center at 2 p.m. on Nov. 25.
Oregon's men won't be there, but the No. 8 Portland Pilots will be in Monday's NCAA meet at Terre Haute, Ind. The Pilots placed second to BYU at last week's west regional, with UP's Alfred Kipchumba and Trevor Dunbar finishing second and third, respectively. Oregon was sixth. The 11th-ranked Duck women are in the NCAA field.
PSU's regular-season finale is 7 p.m. Saturday at Stott Center against Sac State.
