Metro League champion Westview falls in OT to David Douglas at state
CORVALLIS - If nothing else, Westview's girls water polo team went down swinging at state.
The Wildcats, the Metro League champions, pushed Mt. Hood Conference champion David Douglas to the limit in Friday's consolation semifinal at Osborn Aquatic Center before finally falling short 14-12 in overtime.
Westview ended its year at 14-4, while the Scots lost to Lincoln in Saturday's fifth-place match and finished at 15-2.
The Wildcats gave the Scots a great run for their money on Friday too. Westview pushed out to a 4-2 lead in the first quarter, saw David Douglas tie the score 6-6 at the half, led again 10-8 after three quarters, then went to overtime tied at 11-11.
But the Scots held the upper hand in the extra period, getting two scores from Emma Redwine-Hixson and another from McKenzie Engelgau there while Westview managed just one goal from Madi McGlone.
McGlone finished with three goals for the Wildcats, while teammate Emily England scored four times - once in each quarter - and Julianne O'Connor added two in the loss.
Redwine-Hixson led both teams with four scores, while Arielle Stuart added three in the victory.
