Lincoln pulls away late to end Sunset's run in the state polo tourney
CORVALLIS - Sunset's boys knew they could compete.
And the Apollos did just that at the High School State Water Polo tournament, but saw their season come to an end with a 13-7 loss to Lincoln in the consolation semifinals at Osborn Aquatic Center on Friday.
The Apollos, who split with the Cardinals in the regular season, stuck with Lincoln like glue for three quarters on Friday, but when the Cardinals broke through for four goals in the fourth quarter, Sunset couldn't respond.
Sunset trailed 4-2 after the opening frame and 7-4 at the half, but moved within 8-6 when Zane Bambusch connected with 1 minute, 9 seconds to go in the third.
The Apollos would get no closer, though. Lincoln's Nicholas Lanker scored three times in the final 8:10 and his efforts, along with a solid defensive effort, gave the Cardinals the win. Bambusch and Braden Martinez scored twice each to lead Sunset, while Sam Sullivan, Grant Johnson and Corey Pfleiger added one each.
Lincoln then edged Lakeridge 9-8 on Saturday to finish fifth. Sunset, the third-place finisher in the Metro League, finished at 18-9, while Metro runner-up Lincoln ended at 10-4.
