Beaverton girls cant hold lead at state
Beaverton leads after three quarters, but falls 8-5 to Lincoln's girls
CORVALLIS - Beaverton's girls water polo team did just about everything it needed in its Friday consolation semifinal at state.
It did for three quarters, anyway.
But the Beavers - facing Lincoln at Osborn Aquatic Center - saw the Cardinals score the final four goals of the game on Friday and used that edge to pull away and win 8-5. The Beavers, the Metro League runners-up, ended their year at 15-4, while Metro No. 3 Lincoln went on to beat David Douglas on Saturday and finish fifth at 10-4.
Beaverton got a first-quarter goal from Elaine Marshall to tie the game at 1-1, then added scores by Hannah Hollowell, April Snodgrass and Madeline Motto in the second to push ahead 4-3. The Beavers kept that lead in the third thanks to a late score from Marshall, but it was all Lincoln the rest of the way.
Audrey Weiss scored three times in the fourth quarter for Lincoln and her efforts, along with a shutdown defensive effort, led the way to the Cardinals' 8-5 win.
