Officer charged in shotgun shooting

Police claim June incident was an accident

A Multnomah County grand jury has indicted a Portland police officer in the shotgun shooting of a mentally ill man.

Officer Dane Reister is charged with third and fourth degree assault for shooting Kyle Monroe on June 30. In addition, the district attorney's office says it will also charge Reister with negligent wounding under state law.

Police says Reister shot Monroe with rounds accidentally loaded into a less-lethal shotgun. The grand jury heard from 44 witnesses and reviewed numerous exhibits.

Future court dates have not yet been set.

Reister shot Monroe after responding to reports of a man acting suspiciously around children and armed with knife. Monroe suffered severe physical injuries after being struck with the lethal rounds.
