At about 11 pm on October 28th, after pausing at a stop sign at S.E. 72nd Avenue, 49-year-old Diana Hartzell attempted to continue eastbound on S.E. Carlton Street. But out of nowhere, a motorcycle smashed into the side of her vehicle.
The motorcyclist, identified as 50-year-old Timothy James Engel, had been northbound on S.E 72nd Avenue, about two blocks south of S.E. Woodstock Boulevard, reported Portland Police Bureau Public Information Officer Sgt. Pete Simpson.
Because of the serious nature of the collision, Simpson said that officers called for the Portland Police Bureau's Traffic Division Major Crash Team to respond.
'The driver of the car appeared in no way impaired,' Simpson told THE BEE. 'She remained at the scene, and cooperated fully with the investigation. The man riding the motorcycle was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries.'
The following day, Simpson told us that Engel had died from the injuries sustained in the accident. 'The crash is still under investigation but officers have determined that excessive speed and Engel's intoxication were factors in the crash,' Simpson said.
