Fire caused $28,000 in damage to a second-story apartment in the 15500 block of Southeast Division Street on Saturday night.
Dispatchers received a report of the fire, which was in the bedroom, at 8:58 p.m. Nov. 19, said Firefighter Tommy Schroeder, Portland Fire and Rescue spokesman.
A fire investigator happened to be four blocks away and rushed to the scene, where he saw fire coming from the apartment window.
Firefighters extinguished the fire, which has been determined to be accidental.
According to witnesses, the woman who lives in the unit tried to extinguish the fire herself and yelled for a neighbor to call 9-1-1. The bureau reminds people that it's safest to evacuate a burning structure and then to call 9-1-1 from a safe location. Fire doubles in size every two seconds and can be unpredictable, making it easy for someone who isn't properly equipped to be quickly overcome, Schroeder said.
