Reese wont run for mayor
Police chief says 'best interests of community' guided his decision
Police Chief Mike Reese has decided against running for mayor.
Reese made the announcement Monday afternoon in a terse press release. He said he appreciated the public's 'kind words of support and encouragement' but had decided that running for the mayor's post was not in his best interest.
'After careful consideration, I've decided that I can best serve the community and the Portland Police Bureau by remaining the chief of police,' Reese said. 'I will not be a candidate for mayor.
'Running for political office is a time-consuming and daunting task. I wish all the candidates the best as they move forward with their campaigns.'
Reese, the city's police chief of 18 months, said in early November that he was considering jumping into the 2012 mayoral race. He also said he would take a couple of weeks to talk the decision over with his family.
His announcement came three weeks after rumors started that Reese was interested in the job. Mayor Sam Adams said early this year he did not plan to seek re-election.
