North Marion, Kennedy compete at Wilsonville Night Meet

The start of the 2013 high school sports season began at Wilsonville High School on Thursday evening for the school’s annual Night Meet that attracts dozens of teams from Oregon’s six athletic classifications.

The North Marion and Kennedy teams were among the 46 schools that competed and combined to bring in more than 1,000 athletes to the event.

The Huskies brought 15 runners to the meet with a team that consisted mostly of junior and seniors.

Senior Christian Parr of the men’s team had the best outing of all North Marion runners after finishing 14th in the Senior 3K with a time of 9:26. The time was an improvement of 35 seconds over his best 3K time he set last season, which was also at the Night Meet.

Elbert Giron led the team’s juniors with a 54th place finish in 10:34. Colin Barrow had an impressive showing as the team’s lone competitor in the Sophomore 3K, placing 34th with a time of 10:15.

Junior Derek Jones led the team’s Novice runners with a 57th-place finish in 13:15.

The women’s team was led by senior Hannah Surcamp, who led the Huskies with a 54th-place finish in 12:54. Teammates Grace Durst and Madalyn Peterson placed 56th (15:07) and 112th (16:42), respectively, in the women’s Novice race.

The Trojans were represented by eight athletes at the Night Meet, five of which went on to place in the top 50 of their divisions.

Freshman Noe Jines had the team’s top overall finish after he took 16th in the Freshman 3K with a time of 10:30, though teammate Dalton Sussee had a better overall time with his 26th-place finish of 10:13 in the Junior 3K.

Lauren Stokely had the best night for the women’s team, placing 20th in the Junior 3K with a time of 12:05. Her mark was remarkably similar to the times she posted in her first two seasons with the Trojans, where she finished the Night Meet in 12:06 her freshman year and in 11:59 as a sophomore.

Cheyla Moranchel finished in 12:39 to place 44th in the Senior 3K, while Irene Osorio was 97th in the Novice 3K with a time of 16:07.
