Hawks down Chiefs 5-3 at Memorial Coliseum

Mac Carruth stopped 46 of 49 shots to help the Portland Winterhawks collect a key victory Friday afternoon at Memorial Coliseum.
An announced crowd of 7.065 saw the Hawks take the lead for good at 4-3 early in the third quarter and get a clinching goal from Brendan Leipsic with 2:15 remaining, as Portland downed the Spokane Chiefs 5-3.
Chase De Leo, Sven Bartschi, Brad Ross, Joe Morrow and Leipsic scored, in that order, for the Winterhawks.
Spokane tied the game 3-3 with a goal at 1:34 of the third period, but Morrow scored on power-play blast off assists from Ross and Ty Rattie.
Portland went 1 for 4 with the man advantage, and Spokane was 1 for 3.
Rattie and Ross each had two assists.
The win pushed Portland's record to 16-9-1-1 (34 points), and the Chiefs slipped to 11-6-1-2 (25).
The Winterhawks return to the coliseum for a 5 p.m. Sunday game with Swift Current.
