Winterhawks notch fifth straight win; Rattie gets second hat trick
PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia - Ty Rattie's second hat trick of the season lifted the Portland Winterhawks to their fifth straight win Tuesday night. The Hawks beat the Prince George Cougars 5-3.
The teams will meet again here Wednesday night.
Rattie scored both goals in the first period as the Hawks led 2-0. Prince George tied the game 2-2 going into the third period and took a 3-2 lead 2:47 into the final frame. But Rattie got the equalizer at 5:01, and Portland pulled ahead with 1:25 remaining on a score by Nic Petan. Brad Ross found an empty net in the closing moments for the final margin.
Rattie and Sven Bartschi, who assisted on the first two goals and three in all, have seven-game scoring streaks.
Portland improved to 20-9-1-1 (42 points) and stayed two points back of Western Hockey League U.S. Division leader Tri-City (22-7-0-0, 44). The Americans won 6-2 at Victoria on Tuesday. Both Portland and Tri-City are 8-2-0-0 in their last 10 games.
Prince George slipped to 9-19-0-2 (20 points).
Rattie's three goals gave him a WHL-leading 31 in 30 games. Bartschi leads the league in assists with 40. Rattie is tied for second in the WHL with 58 points, while Bartschi is fourth with 52 points.
Mac Carruth picked up his 19th win, making 35 saves on 38 shots. Cougars goalie Drew Owsley made 40 saves on 44 Portland shots.
Both teams were 1 for 2 on the power play.
