Rockin' holiday tunes brought crowds to Marylhurst for Park Academy
by: Jim Corso From left, Blake Sakamoto and Brandon Cook perform holiday tunes for the crowd at “The Season Electric.”

While the performances were in Marylhurst University's Clark Commons, nothing was common about 'The Season Electric's' holiday tunes. Musicians with big hair, big sound and big smiles put on a spectacle with tunes like 'Let it Snow,' 'Carol of the Bells' and 'Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree.'

'I enjoy seeing people smile and have a sense of wonder in their eye - especially children and teens,' said Brandon Cook, who played guitar and sang in the performances. 'I don't always get that opportunity with rock shows in clubs.'

With performances on Dec. 2, 3 and 4, the rockin' holiday event produced and created by Blake Sakamoto delighted many.

Sakamoto's musical past - playing keyboards in The Dan Reed Network and opening shows for the Rolling Stones, Bon Jovi, UB40 and Eddie Money - is currently a music teacher at Park Academy, located on the Marylhurst campus. Proceeds from 'The Season Electric' benefitted the small, non-profit school dedicated to empowering students with learning challenges, such as dyslexia.

Sakamoto's musicians this year also included Chael Emmett, Merrill Hale, Steve Adams, Janet Johannes, Karen Johnson Miller, Sharon Bryson, Lydia Moynihan and Michael Hermes.

'My favorite song to perform this year was 'Jingle Bell Rock,'' Cook said. 'I get to sing that song. It get me really excited. (It's a) fun song.'

'The Season Electric,' in its third year, grows each holiday season.

''People could not believe this was a local production,' Sakamoto said. 'We'll keep surprising people every year. 'The Season Electric 2012' will be even more epic.'
