CORVALLIS - Fred Thompson, a defensive tackle on Oregon State's football team, died Wednesday night. He would have been 20 on Sunday.

Thompson, a true freshman from Richmond, Calif., who redshirted this fall, was playing basketball at Dixon Recreation Center on the OSU campus when he collapsed. He was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital, where he was pronounced dead of an apparent heart attack.

The 6-4, 320-pound Thompson, who greyshirted and enrolled at Oregon State last January, missed this season because of shoulder surgery in the spring. He was projected to be in the rotation and a possible starter at D-tackle next season.
