Morning collision pins drivers in vehicles

by: Dick Harris Two drivers had to be cut from their badly damaged vehicles after a three-car collision Thursday morning in Northeast Portland. The drivers were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries.

Two people were seriously injured Thursday morning in a three-car collision that pinned drivers inside crumpled vehicles.

Both people were men in their late 30s or late 20s. They were pulled from the vehicles and taken to local hospitals with what firefighters called life-threatening injuries. Their names have not been released.

A driver of the third vehicle was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.

Portland Fire and Rescue firefighters were called at about 6 a.m. to the multiple-car crash near Northeast 82nd Avenue and Killingsworth Street. Crews from the Sandy Boulevard Fire Station 12 used special equipment to free the two drivers pinned in their vehicles.

Firefighters said the driver of a small sedan had been pushed into the dashboard during the crash. Fire crews used hydraulic spreaders, rams and cutters to tear the car out from around the driver.

Portland police are investigating the crash.
