Sandy sees where it stands
GIRLS BASKETBALL-Sandy passes early bar test against South Albany
Kyla Miner brought the ball across half court and heaved a shot with Sandy's Bella McCarthy in her face. The shot banked off the backboard and in. South Albany's coaches listened for a whistle, but all that was heard was the buzzer, a collective gasp and an assistant coach snapping a clipboard over his knee.
Miner's shot came with the Rebels trailing by four points, and if a foul was called on the Pioneers, Miner would have been sent to the line with a chance to tie the game.
Instead, Sandy earned a 68-67 win in a game they led in nearly its entirety.
A nutty finish and a debatable call aside, the Pioneers controlled much of the contest. And they did so against a team that, two days ago, beat Northwest Oregon Conference opponent Sherwood, who finished second in the league last season.
Tammy Joseph led Sandy with 28 points, while McCarthy and Mckenzie Warren each had 11 points.
