Lady Indians split weeks games

Scappoose struggles against top-ranked Cascade, but dominates visiting Molalla
by: John Brewington MAKING A GRAB—Scappoose’s Julia Grabhorn sneaks a hand in for the ball during last Friday’s game with Molalla. The Indians won the game.

The Scappoose Lady Indians found the going against defending 4A state champion a little tough at Cascade on Tuesday, but they bounced back to pull off a non-league basketball win at home over Molalla on Friday.

The Tribe could muster just five points in the first period at No. 1-ranked Cascade, but had a better second period. Still, they were behind 24-13 at the break. It was a fairly even third period, but Cascade put the game away in the fourth period.

None of the Lady Indians were in double figures in the contest.

'We were down by just nine near the end of the third, but they outscored us in the last period by nine. We played them tough in the second and third quarters. We were not aggressive enough with our shots and they got quite a few more free throws.'

Gonzales said that Cascade had a pair of tall posts that made things hard for Scappoose, but they have been doing a fair job of boxing out.'

Scappoose played much better at home Friday against visiting Molalla, posting a 51-44 win.

The Tribe girls pressed Molalla, picked up a number of steals and led 17-2 by the end of the first period. Three minutes into the second period they were up 23-4 before Molalla went on a 9-0 run. Scappoose held a 14-10 edge in the third and the two teams were even in the fourth period.

'We played really well at both ends of the floor,' the coach said. 'We got a lead and coasted the rest of the way. It's a good problem to have to play teams with the lead. Kendall Kierleber came off the bench and played really well (for an injured Alix Raya).'

All the Lady Indians who played Friday scored in the game. Zoey Hendryx led Scappoose with 13 points and Shay McGuire was also in double digits with 11.

Scappoose was on the road Tuesday at Roosevelt and Friday and Saturday will play in the Gladstone Tournament.

The team plays in the three-day Stayton Tournament after Christmas.
