Thieves strip copper wire from rock quarry crushing machine

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office is looking for copper wire thieves they believe caused $15,000 in damage and losses at the Eagle Star Quarry in St. Helens this weekend.

The suspects reportedly broke into the Eagle Star Rock Products Quarry, 35365 Hankey Road, and stripped valuable heavy copper wire from a large rock crushing machine. This left the machine inoperable, Sheriff Jeff Dickerson said. The thieves also kicked in doors, cut locks and damaged other equipment.

'It's a pretty big case,' Dickerson said.

A wheelbarrow, presumably used in the theft, was left behind by the suspects.

Dickerson said the crime occurred sometime over the weekend when the facility is closed, probably under the cover of night.
