Eagles keep moving on up

1A BOYS HOOPS - Damascus dominates City Christian in Valley 10 play

Damascus Christian pounded out a 50-34 boys basketball win over City Christian on Tuesday night, racing out to an early double-digit lead and never facing a challenge.

The Eagles set the tone in the first quarter, moving ahead 9-2 when Austin Wood fired a cross-court pass that found sharp-shooter Eric Rauch wide-open for a 3-pointer. Rauch finished the quarter with a floater in the lane that extended the margin to 10 points.

Not willing to sit on the lead, Damascus coach Terry Calhoun threw a wrench at any City comeback plans by moving his team into a zone defense to start the second quarter.

Rauch, the team's best defender, followed the Lions' all-leaguer Mikey Chown all over the court, while 6-foot-2 Damascus center Jeremiah Woods planted himself near the basket daring anything to come near the rim.

No one did.

City settled for perimeter jumpers and couldn't connect.
