Tribe girls win Newport Invitational for third straight swim meet title

Girls a surprise first with some exciting races

The Scappoose High swim teams have well exceeded expectations so far this year and they added to their laurels with a stunning performance at the Newport Invitational.

Scappoose coach David Richmond said the team has participated in the Newport meet since 2007, but he wanted his girls to finish in the top three and boys in the upper half of the 11-team meet this season. He got better than that as the girls won their third consecutive meet, and the boys finished a close fourth.

'We traveled south to see some new teams and challenge ourselves,' Richmond said. 'Some of the best teams in the state year after year participate including last year's state champions, North Bend (boys) and Phoenix (girls).  Our goal going in for the girls was to place in the top three and for boys the upper half of the meet.'

'Incredible…we are swimming very fast very early in the season,' he added. '(We had) a lot of impressive swims this weekend.'

One of those efforts included Anna Ford coming from behind on the last leg of the relay to give them first place. Ford also took second in the 200 free, first in the 100 free, and swam on the second-place 400 free relay team.

Erin Heath cut five seconds off her individual medley time to take second. She also swam on the winning 200 free relay, plus took second in the 100 backstroke.

Cami Miltich broke the 27-second barrier to win the 50 free. She also swam in the medley relay, the second-place 400 relay, and took second in the 100 fly.

Richmond said Ryan Rafferty passed last year's fourth-place finisher in the 100 breast in the last 10 yards of the race to take first. He also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team, the third-place 200 free relay, and took third in the 200 IM.

Richmond was very pleased by all the standout swims, noting he could write a long list but there were just too many to mention.

The girls won the meet by 55 points over North Bend and the boys were fourth, just four points behind third-place Phoenix.

Scappoose takes a break during the holidays. They will resume competition with the Tillamook Cheese Relays on Jan. 5.
