Silvia C. Haley

Silvia Clelia Haley of St. Helens died Dec. 14, 2011, at a hospital in Portland. She was 84.

Silvia Clelia Battistoni was born June 6, 1927, in Velletri, Italy, to Vincenzo and Emilia (Latini) Battistoni.

Educated in Italy, she relocated to California at the age of 18, living there most of her life until moving to St. Helens in 1990 from Sacramento.

On Dec. 24, 1953, she married Orville Haley in Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 2006.

A homemaker and member of St. Frederic Catholic Church, she enjoyed gardening and bird watching, and was an animal lover.

Most of all she loved to be with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived her daughters and son's-in-laws, Gloria and Steve Saylors of St. Helens, and Linda and Jesse Wright of Amarillo, Texas; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass was held Dec. 20 at St. Frederic Catholic Church in St. Helens.

Committal service and crypt entombment were at Columbia Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Scappoose.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Association.

Genie M. Rawlings

Genie Marie Rawlings of Scappoose passed away Dec.13, 2011. She was 61.

Genie Marie was born Oct. 9, 1950, in Berea, Ohio.

Her father was in the military and their family moved around several times before settling in Portland.

The last five years she made Scappoose her home.

She is survived by her sons, Eric Wood and Nick Wood; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and siblings, Joe Parker, Catherine Parker, Chris Parker, Evelyn Brush and Parker McKenzie.

In respect of her wishes, the family has chosen to do a private graveside service only at Lone Fir Cemetery in Portland.

Arrangements are by Hustad Funeral Home.

Gerald 'Jerry' Sachs

Gerald 'Jerry' Lee Sachs of Pelican Rapids, Minn., died Dec. 14, 2011, at OHSU hospital in Portland. He was 72.

Mr. Sachs was born Jan. 17, 1939, in Detroit Lakes, Minn., to Marvin J. and Caroline V. (Larson) Sachs.

Educated in West Linn and Detroit Lakes, Minn., he graduated in 1957 from Detroit Lakes High School. He went on to receive his Bachelor's Degree in music and business education at Moorhead State University, graduating in 1962.

On May 28, 1966, he married Carol McAnnany in Detroit Lakes, Minn.

They lived in Minnesota for his teaching career where he started as a band and choir teacher. He then moved on to teaching accounting and business at the Minnesota Tech Colleges for 19 years, retiring in 1995.

When he retired they moved to Salem where they purchased Espresso Road. In 1998 they bought Beacon Shores Resort in Cross Lake, Minn. When they sold the resort in 2001, they purchased their home on Lake Lida near Pelican Rapids, Minn. They spent the winters in Oregon and summers in Minnesota.

When they were residing in Oregon they attended First Lutheran Church in St. Helens. While in Minnesota, they attended Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Pelican Rapids.

A church choir director, youth counselor and treasurer, he was also a band director for the city band in Granite Falls, Minn., umpired youth baseball and played bass guitar in the Four Wheel Drive, Stone River and Ridge Runner Bands.

Among the things he enjoyed were music, spending time with family, church and his savior was Jesus Christ.

He loved the Minnesota lakes where he taught many kids to fish, water ski, and hunt.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Carol Sachs of Pelican Rapids, Minn.; children and spouses, Scott and Julie Sachs of Pelican Rapids, Todd and Rhonda Sachs of Kirkland, Wash., Brad and Mindy Sachs of Pelican Rapids, Sean and Erin Sachs of Salem, Heather and David Simoneaux of Durham N.C., and Joy and Brian MacDaniels of Wilsonville; grandchildren, Shauntae and Sarah, Tad, Faith and Dane, Sidney and Billy, Summersby and Sterling, and Phineas; sisters, Judy and Don Cox of Milwaukie, and Carol and Kevin Shipley of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; father-in-law, William McAnnany of St. Helens; sisters-in-law, Pat and Harold Storm of Bozeman, Mont., and Judy and Mike Johnson of St. Helens; brother-in-law, Tim McAnnany of St Helens; many nieces and nephews; and DLHS Class of 1957.

A celebration of life was held Dec. 19 at First Lutheran Church in St. Helens.
