Players and coaches on Oregon's eighth grade all-star football team learned last week that the team has earned an all-expense-paid trip to San Antonio, Texas, to compete in the Football University National Championship finals in the Alamodome.
Seeded fifth in the tournament, the Oregon stars will play fourth-seeded Kentucky on Jan. 3, with the winner advancing to a Jan. 5 semifinal with top-seeded Central Florida.
The championship final is scheduled for the Alamodome on Saturday, Jan. 7.
Several local players are vying for the Oregon all-stars, including: Oregon City eighth graders Conner Mitchell (running back), Trevon Bradford (wide receiver), Jordon Phillips (cornerback), Kaiva Lee (linebacker) and Sam Maughan (tight end); Putnam area eighth graders Zach Mason (defensive tackle) and Aaron Dolfay (defensive tackle); and CYO eighth graders Devin King (cornerback) and Ronnie Rusk (linebacker).
The Oregon team has advanced in the tournament through a 40-36 win over a Washington all-star team in a game played in Seattle, and through a 62-2 rout of Sunnyvale, Calif. in a second-round game played at Lake Oswego High School. Mitchell and Oregon quarterback Payton Pritchard of West Linn were named co-most valuable players for the Sunnyvale game.
