Bikes for Humanity PDX held a 'donation and adoption' drive at Safeway in Lake Grove on Dec. 17 and 18. The all-volunteer organization, based in Portland, increases access to affordable and safe bicycles while empowering self-sufficiency in bike maintenance and commuting,Local volunteers refurbish bikes so they can then be 'adopted' by people for a suggested fee. Money raised helps fund financial aid and a work-for-trade program for those who otherwise couldn't afford their bikes. Volunteers at the Lake Grove event took information from interested donors and adopters, hosted a bike work station for repairs, tune-ups and bike fits and offered test rides.
In the end, 38 bikes were donated and 18 were adopted by new owners, according to the group.
