Carruth, Hawks blank Seattle on New Year's Eve for team's 12th straight home win
It was a happy New Year's Eve for the Portland Winterhawks and their fans.
Before a crowd of 10,356 at the Rose Garden, the Hawks beat Seattle 2-0 Saturday night.
It was their 12th consecutive victory at home.
Mac Carruth got his first shutout of the season, stopping 18 shots. It was his third shutout in the Western Hockey League.
The Hawks were 5 for 5 on the penalty kill.
Portland outshot Seattle 14-6 in the first period and 23-3 in the second period. The first goal didn't come, though, until 9.3 seconds remained in the second frame. It came from Ty Rattie, who raised his WHL-high tally to 37 goals.
The Hawks struck again 1:51 into the third period, when Brendan Leipsic connected on a power-play shot from the left face-off circle.
Portland improved to 24-1-2-1, while Seattle slipped to 16-18-0-1.
