Saturday, June 2, was a banner day for Crook County Middle School athletics.
Eighteen Colts earned medals at the Oregon Middle School Track and Field Championships, which were held in La Pine.
“Everyone did a great job this weekend,” said coach Matt Fischer. “We had a ton of PR’s (personal records) and all of the coaches were very proud of what the athletes did.”
Not only did 18 CCMS athletes place in the event, five school records were broken.
Liam Pickhardt led the way for the Colts, finishing second in both the 800 and 1,500-meter runs. Pickhardt crushed the school record in the 1,500 with a time of 4:40.21, finishing just behind Mason Reardon of Scappoose, who won with a time of 4:38.35.
Also breaking school records on the track was Sam Santiago, who finished third in the 200 and fourth in the 100-meter dashes. Santiago’s times of 11.74 and 24.56 were both fast enough to set new school marks. Santiago also placed sixth in the long jump with a leap of 16-10.
Also setting new school records were Gwyenth Ptomey in the turbo javelin and Ashton Morgan in the discus. Ptomey threw the turbo javelin 70-06 to capture third in the event, while Morgan finished fifth in the girls discus with a toss of 86-09.
The quartet of record breakers were not the only Colts to do well at the state championships.
Laura Fraser was a double medal winner taking third in the high jump (4-08) and fourth in the turbo javelin (70-04). Also placing third was Marissa Shults, who cleared 7-06 in the pole vault. Madison Kussman also had a solid meet, taking fifth in the 400 (1:11.86), and sixth in the 1,500 (5:59.43).
In addition, both girls relay teams placed fifth at the event. The 4x100 relay squad of Audrey Bernard, Paige Kump, Abigail Emerson Smith, and Kaeli Hancock finished with a time of 56.26, while the 4x400 relay team of Bernard, Trinity Templeton, Irene Morales and Morgan posted a time of 5:04.31.
Both Colt boys relay teams also placed in the meet. The boys 4x400 team of Pickhardt, Jack Stubblefield, Emmett Bailor, and Nash Porfily took third with a time of 4:09.11, while the 4x100 squad of Hayden Bates, Stephen Dalton, Pickhardt, and Santiago took fifth with a time of 49.93.
Bailor also placed fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:28.67.
The final Colt to place in the meet was Josh Zemp who took fourth in the shot put with a heave of 40-05.
Although they did not place, several other Colts also had outstanding meets.
Earning seventh place finishes in the meet were Morales in the 800 and Morgan in the 1,500. Taking eighth were Bailor in the 400, Morales in the 1,500, Zemp in the discus, Blake Lopez in the turbo javelin, and Kaeli Hanock in the pole vault. Finishing in ninth place were Jillian Klein (800), Ashley Toomey (1,500), Tori Augustine (discus) Erica Vargas (turbo javelin), and Porfily in the high jump.
Also earning top-10 finishes were Ptomey (1,500), Toomey (800), Connor Chaney (800), Tommy Ross (110 hurdles), and Neil Chaney (pole vault).
“This year we had more committed, hard-working athletes than ever and it shows in the results,” Fischer said. “Many of these athletes can teach you a lot about sticking with something. They have made themselves into winners.”
