Central Oregon legislators to discuss higher education

House Republican Leader Kevin Cameron (R-Salem) will join Reps. Jason Conger (R-Bend), Mike McLane (R-Powell Butte) and Gene Whisnant (R-Sunriver) on Thursday to visit OSU-Cascades and discuss efforts to offer four-year programs at the university.
"Your local Legislators, led by Rep. Conger, effectively championed the need to expand higher education in Central Oregon and persuaded the Legislature to approve investments in facilities for OSU-Cascades and Central Oregon Community College," Rep. Cameron said. "I look forward to visiting OSU-Cascades to see firsthand how that vision can grow in 2013 and beyond."
“We are grateful for Rep. Cameron's support and interest in learning about the importance of OSU-Cascades to our community and local economy,” said Rep. Jason Conger (R-Bend). “After securing capital construction funding for both OSU-Cascades and Central Oregon Community College, we’re engaging local and state leaders to further expand access to higher education and workforce development programs in our region.”
Over the past 18 months, the Legislature approved bonding authority to help fund the purchase of a building to permanently house OSU-Cascades graduate and research programs. In February, the Legislature also approved lottery-backed bonds to help renovate and expand the mathematics and science laboratory at COCC’s Redmond campus.
“Central Oregon depends on a skilled and highly educated workforce to attract new employers in our area,” Rep. Whisnant said. “Our local delegation is committed to further expanding higher education to support Central Oregon’s economy.”
