Crook County records eight pins en route to win

by: LON AUSTIN/CENTRAL OREGONIAN - Mikah Perry of Crook County turns Skyler Gassner of Bend on his head during their 171-pound match. Perry pinned Gassner 2:55 into the match and was one of eight Cowboy wrestlers to record falls in their 58-17 victory.

The Crook County High School wrestling team opened their league season in convincing fashion on Thursday, Jan. 3, as they defeated Bend High School 58-17.
"It's nice to come home for awhile," said Head Coach Mike Shinkle. "We've been on the road a lot. It's a nice way to get back at it here in our own house, with our own crowd supporting us."
Crook County dominated the match from the start with Howie Mole (215-pounds), and Tyrel Albert, (275) recording first round pins. Then 103-pounder Riley Omlid won by forfeit, giving the Cowboys an 18-0 lead before the match had hardly started.
Six other Cowboys recorded falls as Brett Gast (130), Kody Dixon (135), Cameron Anderson (145), Jake Shinkle (152), Dustin Chapman (160), and Micah Perry (171) all pinned their opponents, while Taylor Coyle won an 11-7 decision at 140-pounds.
The match was the first time since the Newberg Duals the first weekend of the season that the Cowboys had their entire lineup back and wrestling. The team has been battling illness and injuries and is just starting to get back into shape.
"I sense the fact that we are starting to turn the corner and get back to where we are supposed to be," Shinkle said. "We still are not where we need to be at this time of year. We have a lot of conditioning yet to do."
At the Northwest Duals last week in Hillsboro Perry, Albert and Shinkle all didn't wrestle, while Kody Dixon only wrestled the first day of the tournament, but the team still went 7-1 during the tournament with their only loss being a four-point defeat to Hillsboro.
Coach Shinkle named Jerod Dixon his wrestler of the week for the last week of December as he went 8-0 for the tournament, then named Jake Shinkle wrestler of the week for his performance against Bend last night. Shinkle has been out since the first week of the season and was not cleared to practice until Monday, yet still pinned his opponent.
The Cowboys are off until Tuesday when they travel to Mountain View for a league match starting at 7 p.m. Then on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12, they are at the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond.
"The Oregon Wrestling Classic is basically the state championship of dual meets," Shinkle said. "It will be all 5A teams and that's when we will first see teams like Eagle Point, Hermiston and Crater. All the big guns will be there."
"I'm just really proud of the kids," said Shinkle. "We have overcome a lot of sickness and some injuries. Just a lot of adversity and that's the character that I want to see in turning these young boys into young men. And they are doing it."
