Cowgirls defeat Madras
Girls tennis team wins 5-3, boys fall 3-5 in first matches of the season
The Crook County High School girls tennis team defeated Madras 5-3 on Tuesday while the boys team fell to the White Buffaloes by the same 5-3 score.
"It was our first match and the girls were a little tentative going into it," said Head Coach Lloyd Rodgers. "The girls get a little nervous on the first one so they've got some improvement to do, but overall they played well."
Rodgers was especially pleased with the performance of number one doubles team Krissi Kemper and Katie Leavitt, and number two singles player Erin Crofcheck.
The Cowgirls got wins from their first three doubles teams in the match with Kemper and Leavitt defeating Amanda Goodson and Sam Blann 6-3, 6-0, while in the number 2 doubles Maggie Trinchieri and Cassie Low beat Paige Jorgensen and Kadie Manion 6-3, 6-2. In the number three doubles match Crook County's Chealsie Finerin and Jessalyn Walker defeated Andrea Marcotte and Stephanie Stovall 7-6, 6-4.
Crook County also got wins from their number one and two singles players. Tessa Romine defeated Kat Green 6-1, 6-4 and Crofcheck defeated Meagan Fine 6-0, 6-4.
"Our guys are pretty young and pretty green, but our singles players really stepped it up pretty well," said Rodgers.
Zac Thompson of Crook County defeated Jon Hutchins 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in something of a marathon match, while Pierre Blaise won over Jason Garcia of Madras 6-2, 6-3 and Joe Ochlschlaeger beat Daniel Buero 6-2, 7-6.
Madras turned the tables in the doubles matches winning all four. Mervyn Garcia and Skyles Sensibaugh defeated Trevor Brown and Paul Robideau in the number one doubles match, 6-2, 6-2.
"Our number one doubles team hit a pretty strong team right off the bat," said Rodgers. "They are an experienced team."
Both tennis teams played again on Thursday with the Cowgirls defeating The Dalles/Wahtonka 7-1 while the Cowboys fell 6-2. Complete results of that match will be in the Tuesday Central Oregonian.
Next up for the Cowgirls is a match on Saturday, March 15, at Klamath Union while the boys team is off until Tuesday, March 18, when they have a home match against Bend High School beginning at 4 p.m.
