Golfers 7th at District Preview Tournament

Jake Shinkle leads Cowboys with an 81
The Crook County High School boys golf team placed seventh in the eight- team district golf preview at Big River Golf Course in Umatilla on Monday.
"I felt like we played quite a bit better than we did last week," said Head Coach Chuck Wilcox. "Everyone scored better. It was windy and the conditions were tough but I thought the kids played pretty well for the conditions."
Jake Shinkle shot an 81 to lead the Cowboys, who shot a 358 as a team. Bend won the event with a 293, while Pendleton shot a 309 for second place. Mountain View finished in eighth place with a 370.
All five of the Cowboys golfers shot under 100 in the same tournament for the first time this season.
"All I'm really looking for is for these guys to get a little better each week," said Wilcox. "We are not in a position to beat a lot of people but if we can improve every week that is a big thing for us."
The Cowboys were scheduled to play at Running Y Resort in Klamath Falls on Thursday, but the tournament was cancelled because of weather.
"Courses in central Oregon are really in bad shape," said Wilcox. "We have had to reschedule some events."
With the new schedule the Cowboys are going to have a busy week next week. They play a tournament at Lost Tracks Golf Course in Bend on Tuesday, travel to Burns on Wednesday, then play in Pendleton on Friday.
