Cowboys win at Springfield

Crook County's boys team wins the eight-team invitational, girls fifth
The Crook County Cowboys used strong performances from a handful of athletes to win the eight-team Springfield Invitational Track meet."It wasn't like Sisters, where everyone had personal records," said Head Coach Ernie Brooks. "But it was good."
The boys team got things off to a good start with a win in the 400-meter relay running a time of 44.30 to easily outdistance the competition. Other winners were Scott Elliot in the pole vault with a jump of 13-06, Mark Flegel in the 300 hurdles in a time of 41.70, and Austin Morrell in the 800 with a time of 2:02.60.
David Parks finished second in both the 200-meter dash and the high jump. Mark Blomquist finished second in the Discus throwing 144-00 while Arick Morrell threw 123-10 to finish in third. Flegel added a second place in the high hurdles with a time of 15.60 and Shane Lusk took third in the Long Jump going 20-01.75.
"I didn't hear the team score and the kids said we were in the lead, so I was thinking that we would probably end up in the top three or four," said Brooks. "Then at the end they announced that we were still on top and it was great. The kids went crazy and we celebrated by going to Izzy's."
The Cowgirls were led by Jessica Lea who won both hurdle races. Lea finished the high hurdles in a time of 17.30, and then came back to win the 300 hurdles running a personal record time of 49.00.
"Lea just had a great race," Brooks said.
The Cowgirls also had good performances from Michelly and Kellie Foley who finished first and third in the 1,500-meters as well as Kady Stafford who placed in all three throwing events. In addition to her hurdle wins, Lea also tied for third in the high jump with teammate Cater Lopez with both jumpers clearing 4-08.
"It was a good meet for us," said Brooks. "We are getting closer to that date where everything matters."
The Cowboys will next compete at home on Wednesday in a dual meet against Mountain View. Field events begin at 3:30 p.m., with running events starting at 4 p.m. Then on Saturday, the team will travel to the Crater Invitational in Central Point.
